Johannesburg – One person was killed and four others, including a child, were injured when a vehicle overturned several times on the R103 Lion Park in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said on Saturday.

The incident happened shortly after 16:00, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said. Paramedics arrived on scene and found the vehicle several metres into an open field.

Vermaak said all its occupants were ejected from the vehicle during the rollover. A man was found near the vehicle with fatal injuries and he was declared dead on the scene.

Two men and a woman were found with moderate injuries a few metres away from the vehicle.

They were transported to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg and Northdale Hospital for further medical attention.

“A child, believed to be 2 years old, was found approximately 20m away from the vehicle. A bystander on the scene explained that she heard the child crying in the veld shortly after they stopped on scene.”

Vermaak said the bystander cared for the child until paramedics arrived and took over treatment. The child sustained minor injuries and was later transported to hospital.

The exact cause for the incident was unknown.
