Johannesburg - Reports in the media have suggested a 22-year-old man who was killed in an attack at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, had links to South Africa.

Peter Gonzales-Cruz, who went by the name Peter Ommy, was named as one of the 50 victims in the shooting described as the worst in US history, reported.

The report said Ommy went to a high school in New Jersey, US and also spent some time living in the Central African Republic.

His Facebook page confirmed that he was from New Jersey and indeed spent time living in CAR, but it also listed his hometown as Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa.

His Facebook page has since been changed to a “In Memoriam” format.

At the time of the shooting, he was working for couriers UPS in Orlando.

On Sunday, two cousins of the late Ommy tweeted: "Rest in peace to my wonderful cousin," and, "May you rest easy in Heaven," Orlando Sentinel reported.
