A quick-thinking driver detected something suspicious upon entering a driveway in Shallcross, Durban on Tuesday night and managed to avoid a potential hijacking. Watch. WATCH

Durban - A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in Umbilo, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday afternoon during an attempted hijacking, police said.

The couple was travelling in a car along Ferguson Road around 16:00 when an unknown number of men shot at their car, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said.

The man, believed to be in his thirties, was shot in his upper body and succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on the scene, Rescue Care paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said.

The woman, who was believed to be in her twenties, was shot in her lower body. She was treated on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

One man has since been arrested, Zwane said.
