A man, believed to be in his 60s, was left critically injured this afternoon after he fell two metres down an elevator shaft at a shopping mall in the Bloemfontein CBD on Thursday.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 11h:00 to find the man still lying inside the shaft.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, medics climbed into the shaft and assessed the patient, finding that he had sustained serious injuries to his head and leg, leaving him in a critical condition.

"The man was treated for his injuries and provided with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, provincial fire services assisted paramedics in lifting the patient from the elevator shaft. The man was thereafter transported to Mediclinic Bloemfontein for further treatment."

The details surrounding this incident are not yet known.
