Johannesburg  A suspect has been arrested after a man was stabbed to death for his cellphone and money in central Johannesburg, police said on Sunday.

Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele, said in a statement the 28-year-old suspect was expected in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on a murder charge soon.

The 24-year-old victim’s body was found at the corner of Bree and Polly streets on Saturday morning. He had been stabbed repeatedly.

“The victim was walking with his friend when confronted by [three] suspects. They threatened them with knives and demanded their cell phones and money,” Mbele said.

“One of the victims tried to run away but he was cornered and stabbed. Paramedics certified him dead on the scene.”

One of the men was apprehended at a nearby block of flats while two other suspects are still at large, Mbele confirmed.
