A man charged with the kidnapping and murder of a 2-year-old in Cape Town is to remain behind bars after making his first appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Mzimhle Jikwana, 32, also spent the weekend behind bars following his arrest on Thursday. He was arrested after the body of Oyingcwele Zokufa was found near the N2 highway.

The toddler had been found in a shallow grave after he went missing four days before.

Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi and a delegation visited the site where Zokufa's body had been found. They also visited the toddler's family in Philippi on Friday.

National Prosecuting Authority Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the case was postponed to September 19 for a bail application.
