Cape Town – A swimmer who disappeared off the coast of Richards Bay at the weekend is presumed to have drowned, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Monday.

The man, 28, from Pretoria, was reportedly swimming with two colleagues at sunset on Saturday when they appeared to be caught in rip currents, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

He was swept out to sea before disappearing. His colleagues managed to get ashore unhurt.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park staff, Ezemvelo Marine Officers, and police searched along the shoreline late into the night.

Local dive charter companies and fishermen helped search on Sunday, but there was no sign of the man.

Lambinon said the search continued on Monday with the police’s K9 search and rescue team, and a helicopter.

Authorities were briefing his family. The NSRI thanked all parties for their help in the search. Police were investigating.
