Man to appear in court for traditional ceremony murder in Eastern Cape

Durban – A 41-year-old man is expected to appear at the Willowvale Magistrate’s Court on Monday after accidentally shooting a 23 year-old during a traditional ceremony in the Eastern Cape, local police said.

The suspect, who is facing murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, was arrested on Friday night at Mendwana Locality, Mendu Village in Willowvale.

Police spokesperson captain Jackson Manatha said the suspect was chasing boys away during an mgidi [manhood celebration] ceremony together with the deceased, Athi Ntwalana.

“He allegedly fired some shots to scare the boys but in the process shot and murdered Ntwalana,” said Manatha.

He said police 9mm norinco fire-arm with eight rounds of ammunition on the suspect’s possession.
Manatha said the man did not have the license to possess the fire-arm and ammunition.
