Tzaneen - The man who knocked over a 40-year-old traffic officer working in Tzaneen in a hit-and-run incident has been arrested, Limpopo police said on Monday.

The officer was hit by a speeding car while performing point duty outside Tzaneen on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.

The middle-aged man who knocked over the officer was arrested on Sunday night.

"After the accident he did not stop, he disappeared.... he [then] went to the nearest police station and handed himself in and said 'I have knocked a traffic officer'," said Ngoepe.

The man is expected in the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of culpable homicide.
