A manager at a KFC branch in Somerset West has been suspended over alleged racist remarks after employees reportedly claimed she referred to them as a "bunch of monkeys".

Employees at the KFC branch told the Cape Times that the manager had threatened to fire them after they approached their union about the incident.

"The first time she made racist remarks was when an inspector was going to visit the store. She was angry and said 'I don’t know why I'm placed with [a] bunch of monkeys'. We were unhappy but kept that to ourselves because it was the first time and we thought she had just said that out of anger, but it happened again," the employees said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that a case of crimen injuria had been opened for investigation. Rwexana told News24 that a 37-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared in court on July 25, 2018.

According to KFC Africa public affairs director Thabisa Mkhwanazi, the manager has been suspended while an investigation is in progress.
