Bloemfontein – A manhunt has been launched after a man's body was found burnt beyond recognition at Freedom Square in Thabong in Welkom, Free State police said on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Malebo Khosana said when they arrived on scene on Sunday morning, pieces of burnt tyres were found around the man.

"According to the community members in the vicinity, they heard someone screaming and begging for his life to be spared. They further said they heard several gunshots, and in the morning when they woke up they saw the burnt body," said Khosana.

The body was taken to a state mortuary.

The motive of killing is unknown, he said.

A case of murder was opened.
