Durban – Police have launched a manhunt for a gunman who shot and killed a police officer in Lindelani, outside Durban, on Monday night.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the incident occurred shortly before midnight while officers were on patrol.

"Three officers in a vehicle had been patrolling the streets in Lindelani when they came across a man who was acting in a manner which they deemed to be suspicious," she said.

"The officers approached the man who initially feigned surrender but then fled on foot. The officers pursued the man and during the course of his escape he produced a firearm and fired shots in the direction of the officers who were hot on his heels."

Mbhele said a 28-year-old police constable was shot in the stomach.

The officers returned fire, wounding the suspect.

"The member was rushed to the KwaMashu Poly Clinic but he sadly died as a result of his injuries. The gunman was wounded in the exchange of fire and at this point we are still searching for him," she said.
