Bloemfontein – Free State police have launched a manhunt for two men who escaped from prison on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said Theodarus Botha and Johannes Pheko, who were both serving life sentences for a variety of crimes, escaped from Goedemoed Correctional Services near Smithfield at 12:00.

Both men were convicted for murder, rape, robbery and indecent assault.

"The two overpowered a warder and stole his firearm and his white Opel Corsa bakkie," she said.

Mbambo said the two were spotted in Botshabelo in the Free State on Tuesday.

"They are considered armed and dangerous," she said, adding that the two might be in Bloemfontein.
