The lifeless body of a woman was found floating in a river near the Ximba area just outside Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday afternoon.

ER24 paramedics were called to the scene just after 16:00.

"On arrival, paramedics found the body of a woman lying face down in the river," ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring said on Wednesday.

With the assistance of police divers, the body was retrieved and brought to the riverbank.

"Paramedics assessed the woman and found she had been dead for some time. Nothing could be done for her and she was declared dead," Meiring added.

Circumstances surrounding the incident were not yet known.

Local authorities were investigating.
