ICYMI: The Life and Times of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

2016-09-16 10:17

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela turns 80 later this month - and celebrations are already underway.WATCH

Johannesburg - Ahmed Kathrada, former political prisoner and anti-apartheid activist, said: “To my dear Winnie Mandela: my sister, colleague and comrade. It is with great pleasure that I am able to say a very happy birthday to you.

“On this occasion, we remember your courage, loyalty and commitment to the struggle. We recall how you kept the flag flying in very difficult conditions – throughout our imprisonment. Under adverse conditions – even under banishment in Brandfort – you managed to organise the people. We salute you.

“It will take many books to capture your contribution to the struggle. To me and countless others, you remain a leader and a hero. May you celebrate your 80th birthday in peace and happiness.”

Hugh Masekela, trumpeter, composer and singer said: “Dearest Ma Winnie, may the angels of music smile on all your wildest dreams and always sing for you their sweetest songs.”

Bathabile Dlamini, ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) president, wished Mama Winnie Madikizela Mandela “a long and fruitful life”, saying the nation still needed “her guidance and words of wisdom”. Dlamini served as deputy secretary and later the national secretary of the ANCWL during Madikizela Mandela’s tenure as the president of the league.

“I thank her for the contribution she made to liberate this country, and especially the sacrifices she made for women’s freedom. She taught us to be fearless, orderly and forthright in activities.”

One of the important lessons Winnie Mandela taught women was to stop gossiping and pulling each other down, says Dlamini.

Dlamini described how Ma Winnie’s voice never changes when she is angry or happy.

The league has planned two days’ celebrations for Winnie Mandela’s 80th birthday, which will take place in Vilakazi Street on Sunday, from 10am.

And there will be a second celebration at Emperors Palace per invitation only.
