Pietermaritzburg – A man was left critically injured after he was attacked by two dogs - believed to be pit bulls - at a residence in Longmarket Road, Pietermaritzburg, on Friday morning, paramedics said.

It is understood that the man had heard loud barking and found the two dogs attacking some chickens, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said in a statement.

The dogs then apparently turned on the man.

Paramedics arrived on the scene after being alerted by the police, and found the injured man sitting next to the officers who initially responded.

Meiring said the dogs were scared off when the police fired a warning shot.

"On assessment, paramedics found that the man had sustained a number of serious bite wounds over his head, chest and arms."

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
