Pietermaritzburg - Armed only with gusto and resolve, two Pietermaritzburg medics chased down a trio of muggers and managed to retrieve a stolen cellphone and return it to its grateful owner on Sunday.

Partners Pisto Mdunge and Brandon Drinkwater had been on their way back to their base when they were flagged down by two security guards running along Prince Alfred Street.

"They were running along the road and they flagged us down. One of them had a brick and the other had a broken bottle neck, that is what they were trying to stop the muggers with," he told News24.

The two guards told Drinkwater and Mdunge that they were chasing three muggers who had just robbed a woman of her phone.

Drinkwater and Mdunge then sped off in pursuit of the trio and managed to cut them off.

"We drove ahead and managed to get in front of them. We got out and when they saw us they just threw the cellphone down and carried on running," Drinkwater said.

"I wasn’t going to chase them, we were just happy to get the phone back and give it to the lady. She was really happy," he added.

The three men were still at large.

According to Drinkwater, it was unclear whether or not a criminal case had been registered, and he had no contact with the victim.
