Durban – Taxi owner, and deputy chairperson of Pietermaritzburg's Northern Suburbs Taxi Association, was shot 14 times in the early hours of Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the incident happened around 05:20.

Zwane said taxi boss Vinesh Singh, 50, had been on his way to Bombay Road to fetch the driver of his taxi.

"Whilst parked outside the house waiting for the driver, an unknown male approached the white Toyota bakkie that the deceased was in and immediately opened fire."

Zwane said Singh sustained 14 gun shots. "Two to the chest, two to the stomach, two to the lower back, four to the buttocks, one to the right side pinky finger, one under the right  armpit, one under the chin and one to the right forearm."

He said Singh succumbed to his injuries and slumped over in the passenger seat of his bakkie, as the suspect fled the scene on foot in the direction of Balhambra Way.

The police are asking members of the public with information that could help solve this case to call Umgungundlovu north cluster head of detective services Colonel Chris Wiles on 082 469 9336 or SAPS Mountain Rise's serious or violent crime officer Lieutenant Sizwe Makhathini on 082 925 2582.
