Pietermaritzburg - Maritzburg United midfielder and fan favourite Mondli Cele (27) has died after the car he was travelling in veered off into the Duzi river on Park Drive, Pietermaritzburg.

It is believed a second passenger, a female whose name has not yet been confirmed, also died.

Cele scored the opening goal in the 3-3 draw against Orlando Pirates at the Harry Gwala stadium last night.

Paramedics and the police’s Search and Rescue worked fervently to pry the passengers from the mangled wreck before the vehicle was pulled from the river.

The Witness will update the story as the day progresses.
