Cape Town - Marius Fransman has resigned as member of the Western Cape legislature.

He has confirmed to News24 that he has resigned from his position in the legislature but not from the ANC.

Earlier on Friday, the Western Cape High Court ruled against his application to avoid appearing before the Provincial Legislature’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), EWN reported.

In 2014, Fransman and colleague Pierre Uys were summoned by Scopa to answer questions related to an Auditor-General's report. The report showed irregularities and mismanagement of public funds.

Both of them walked out of the meeting.

Scopa wanted them to explain why billions were spent by the provincial government on consultants.

The ANC in the province want him suspended over a different matter and has resolved that disciplinary procedures against Fransman must be expedited.

Fransman was asked to step aside after he was accused of sexually harassing 21-year-old Louisa Wynand while they were travelling to the party's January 8 celebrations in Rustenburg.

According to Netwerk24 the Western Cape legislature has not confirmed Fransman’s resignation yet.
