Durban – Police have arrested two people after a massive fire broke out at a Shell garage complex on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said charges of malicious damage to property, arson and theft are being investigated by police.

“Two suspects aged 45 and 56 were arrested and charged.”

Zwane said the men would appear at the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The massive fire took place northbound between Ballito and Stanger with many evacuated as firefighters tackled the blaze which began behind a Steers outlet on Sunday morning.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick previously told News24 several minor explosions have been heard, suspected to be gas bottles stored on site.

"Three trucks and trailers are on fire. One of them is a tanker," she said.

No injuries were reported.

Two fire trucks battled the inferno, while traffic officials and Intertoll staff were also on site.
