Pretoria - Former president Thabo Mbeki is going to write a book on Africa’s history to ensure its people are no longer depicted as victims.

His spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga would collaborate on the work with him, he said at an Africa Day event in Pretoria on Wednesday.

“In January 2004, we were in Haiti celebrating its bicentenary, and we thought why don't we try and tell this story and show the struggle of slaves of Haiti, who are Africans who fought and destroyed three empires?"

The book would also focus on the victories of the Ethiopians and South Africa's fight for democracy.

‎"We want to focus on the last decade of the 1800's. Then we come to the last decade the 19th century and tell the story of Ethiopia. Then to the last decade of the 20th century and tell the story of South Africa," he said. ‎

A young high school pupil once relayed to him her concerns that Africans were only portrayed as victims in school history books.

"I'm coming to the conclusion that we don't know ourselves. We don't know our history. We thought we should write a book,‎" he said.

Mbeki stressed that African could no longer be victims.

"‎We are victorious," he said.
