Durban - KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC Willies Mchunu on Monday decried the brutal murder of an African National Congress activist at the KwaMashu hostel.

The 50-year-old man, identified only as Mr Mnqayi, was allegedly gunned down at the notorious hostel on Sunday.

According to a media release issued by Mchunu’s department, Mnqayi was shot repeatedly while entering the gate at KwaMazambane residential units.

Mchunu expressed shock at the murder and called on hostel residents who might have information about the incident to hand it over to the police.

“I find this murder to be totally abhorrent and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms. The police [is] looking into this matter and we appeal to the hostel residents to observe calm and restraint and let the police to get into the bottom of this matter,” he said.
