Cape Town – Western Cape Transport and Public Works MEC Donald Grant has praised traffic officer Nizaam Alexander for fighting off a gunman who shot him and tried to steal his gun.

The province on Thursday released a video of Alexander being shot at point blank range during a routine patrol in November last year.

Alexander, who was saved from serious injury by his bullet proof vest, returned fire and chased the shooter, who had wanted to rob him of his firearm.

When he was unable to catch him, Alexander returned to issue a traffic fine to a motorist who had been driving in the emergency lane of the N2 near Borcherd's Quarry in Cape Town, before seeking medical attention.

Alexander was presented with the city’s Traffic Officer of the Year Award 2015.

"Traffic Officer Nizaam Alexander’s conduct in this incident exemplifies the professionalism and dedication to duty of our traffic officers from all services. We commend all our devoted traffic officers who place their lives in danger every day to make our roads safer," Grant said.
