Gauteng police have moved to clarify that they have, as yet, not released any sketches in connection with the New Year's Eve shooting in Melville, Johannesburg.

Two women were killed and six people injured in the shooting when the occupants of a black BMW SUV cruised past Poppy's restaurant in Melville and opened fire on patrons.

Earlier this month,  Saturday Star  published a sketch drawn by an independent artist with years of expereince with the police.

The sketch depicts a man wearing a helmet with what appeared to be a lollipop stick or cigarette between his lips.

Social media users questioned why the person in the sketch was wearing a cycling helmet when the CCTV footage showed a black SUV driving past Poppy's.

News24 approached police spokesperson Kay Makhubele on various issues around the sketch.

It has since been clarified that Makhubele's responses referred in general to the work on a sketch artist.

"We wish to confirm emphatically that the South African Police Service have not released any identikit or sketch. We further wish not to be drawn into commenting on illustrations/sketches by persons outside the mandate of the South African Police Service.

"Police have previously refrained from commenting on the investigations into the Melville and Mary Fitzgerald Square shooting incidents. This position will remain until the investigations are concluded, not unless there is a need to communicate as shall be advised by the investigators," Makhubele said in a statement on Tuesday.
