Bloemfontein – Family and friends paid tribute on Thursday afternoon to a 21-year-old University of the Free State graduate who was killed in a car accident.

Sizakele Mbense died on Saturday night, a day after she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences.

She was completing her post-graduate degree in anthropology, and working at the university as a tutor.

Mbense and her friend, Thatcherica McGail, 22, were travelling in a silver Volkswagen. Trauma Response Africa said Mbense was thrown from the car and died on the scene.

McGail was being treated at Pelonomi Private Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Speaking at the memorial service at the Kovsie Church, family spokesperson, Maureen Mahlo, described Mbense as “jolly” and ambitious.

“She was a jolly person, always with a smile on her face. We lost a good child. God’s plans are not our plans and his thoughts are not our thoughts. God has a plan, he never makes a mistake," she said.

Her friend, Tsalaemang Thinane, commended Mbense for living in the moment.

Mbense left two siblings and her parents. She would be buried at West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg on Saturday.
