'She was a normal, coloured girl from the new South Africa' - Franziska's father

Franziska Blöchliger's bereft father Florian describes his daughter as a "normal coloured girl from the new South Africa" who reflected the political changes in the country. Florian is Swiss and his wife Shireen is South African. WATCH

Cape Town - Parliament started on a sad note on Thursday with messages of sympathy for the family of slain teen Franziska Blöchliger.

After a motion from the IFP after Blöchliger's body was found in the Tokai forest on Monday afternoon, the ANC and the NFP stood up to offer condolences to other families who had suffered losses across the country.

Three people were arrested in connection with Blöchliger's death. They were expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning.

The ANC expressed condolences to the families of three people killed in a house fire in Sebokeng on Saturday and the death on Sunday of a baby rescued from the fire.

MPs were asked to remember three teenagers killed when a bus and a bakkie crashed in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, early on Thursday. 11 were still in a serious condition after that accident, the House was told.

The EFF rose to commemorate the death on March 5 of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

During these motions, MPs uncharacteristically kept their heckling down, although the DA objected to the EFF's motion on Chavez.
