Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer was shot and injured while stopping a hijacking in Mayfair on Friday afternoon, a spokesperson said.

Two officers saw an armed man pulling a driver out of a silver Audi on the corner of Hanover Street and 12th Avenue around 16:00, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

A shootout broke out when the officers intervened. One officer was shot in the left hand. The would-be hijacker fled in a gold-coloured VW Golf. No arrests had been made.

The Audi driver was in shock, but otherwise unhurt.
