Cape Town - A Johannesburg Metro Police officer was hit by a car after pulling over a vehicle at the Buccleuch Interchange on the N1 North on Saturday night, Netcare 911 has confirmed.

Spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics responded to the scene after receiving a call at 23:25.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the officer had pulled over a vehicle when a Mercedes came hurling down the highway, hit the officer and then overturned,” he said.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the roadway littered with accident debris and the twisted frame of the police vehicle. The twisted frame of the other vehicle had come to rest on its side in the centre median.”

The officer was stabilised and airlifted to hospital.

The driver of the Mercedes suffered moderated injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Authorities are investigating.
