A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer was shot dead in Hillbrow on Thursday, JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar has told News24.

"We are still not sure of what happened, but the officer was off-duty at the time of the incident," he said.

Minnaar added that a search of the two suspects implicated in the shooting was underway.

He said the two had fled the scene with the officer's service pistol.

Minnaar could not give more details surrounding the incident and could not immediately reveal the identity of the officer.

"Officers are surrounding the area working on the search of the suspects," he added.

Minnar said a docket would be opened and a murder case would be investigated.
