Metro cops strike it lucky, retrieve stolen matches and truck

Benoni - Four suspects are expected in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Monday in connection with a truck hijacking in which matches valued at R600 000 was stolen.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said its K9 unit acted on a tip off and recovered the truck, hit in Pretoria on Friday, at 20:00 that night on a plot in Cloverdene, Benoni.

The truck had been drawing two trailers of matches.

“The four suspects arrested were caught red-handed unloading from the hijacked truck onto a 4-tonner truck.

Although they claimed they were hired to do the unpacking and loading of the cargo and claimed ignorance as to the hijacking, the Metro Police arrested them,” Kgasago said.

“A sophisticated jammer with eight aerials was found still connected to the idling hijacked truck’s batteries to jam the tracker signal.”

The four suspects aged between 22 and 42, were charged with possession of a hijacked truck and stolen goods.
