Cape Town – Commuters in Cape Town have again been warned to prepare themselves for another day of delays.

Metrorail warned that trains on mainly the central line will be delayed by between 30-40 minutes after continued vandalism and arson resulted in reduced capacity.

Commuters on the northern and southern lines were also told that trains would be delayed by anywhere between 5 to 30 minutes.

On Monday, SA police, Metrorail Protection Services and other law enforcement officials were on high alert after a train was set alight in Kraaifontein and another three carriages were set alight at the Esplanade Station on Friday.

This came after a pair of adjoining trains were set alight at Cape Town the previous weekend, causing transport chaos in the city.

Meanwhile, the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned that Metrorail is nearing collapse and emergency measures were needed to "save the system" that carried more people to work in Cape Town than any other form of public transport.

"We have a state of civic emergency on our hands and we must take tough and necessary measures before we lose the backbone of public transport in Cape Town," Chamber president Janine Myburgh said.
