Durban - Bemused paramedics were confronted with an odd scene in Ballito on Wednesday when they found the wreckage of a microlight aircraft in the middle of a road.

Before the aircraft could embark on its maiden flight, it "crash-landed" after the trailer it was being transported on unhitched and swerved into oncoming traffic.

No one was seriously injured in the bizarre crash.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said a car had been towing the laden trailer on the R102, near Compensation.

"A light motor vehicle was towing a trailer loaded with a microlight when it was involved in a collision. Upon turning onto the R102 Compensation, the trailer unhitched itself and crossed over the lane, hitting a motor vehicle head-on," he said.

"The driver of the vehicle was lucky to escape with minor injuries and was attended to by paramedics. It is believed that that the microlight was brand new and on its way for delivery and its maiden flight."
