Cape Town – A light aircraft crashed onto a residential property near Grand Central Airport in Midrand, Johannesburg on Sunday, paramedics said.

“A report from the owners of the house say that they heard a big bang and when they went out they found that the plane had crashed into a tree about five metres from the house,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

The cause of the crash, which happened around noon, would be investigated.

Botha said the pilot was critically injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

According to ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak the man was ejected from the aircraft during the crash.

Vermaak added that no one else was injured.
