Pretoria - An inter-ministerial committee responsible for looking into the drought happening in parts of the country will discuss their progress on Friday morning.

The team is led by Co-operative Governance Minister Pravin Gordhan.  He was expected to be joined by Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi at the briefing.

Mokonyane's spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said the briefing was to provide a "national perspective of where we are".

"This is about what plan government has in ensuring that we are looking at the issue of the drought as it stands," he told News24.

The drought conditions have had a knock-on effect for farmers especially.

According to The New Age, at least 40 000 cattle have died in KwaZulu-Natal, while the Mpumalanga Red Meat Producers Association said at least three million cattle, and thousands of sheep and goats could be culled.

Water restrictions have been implemented in various parts of the country.
