Durban – A man who allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend repeatedly in full view of commuters at a KwaZulu-Natal taxi rank on Wednesday has died after witnesses attacked him, local police said on Thursday.
His ex-girlfriend survived.
The incident unfolded at around 10:40 at Taxi City in Richards Bay, spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said.
Khosi Khumalo, 30, was with his ex-girlfriend at the rank when an argument ensued. He then took out a knife and stabbed his ex-girlfriend four times on the body.
Members of the community who witnessed the incident intervened and began assaulting Khumalo, Mbhele said.
The couple was taken to the hospital for further medical treatment, however, Khumalo succumbed to his injuries. His ex-girlfriend is recovering in hospital.
Mbhele said Khumalo's ex-lover alleged that Khumalo approached her and when she refused to speak to him, an argument ensued and Khumalo stabbed her.
The police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
KZN acting provincial commissioner Major General Bheki Langa urged members of the public to never take the law into their own hands.
"Police are there to help and arrest those who break the law. Those found performing the acts of vigilantism will be arrested and sentenced accordingly," he said.
