Mob kills man after finding him with stolen soccer boots

Johannesburg - A man died on Thursday after residents of the Vusimuzi squatter camp near Kempton Park assaulted him for allegedly stealing a pair of soccer boots.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng, a man had left his boots in front of the kitchen door when he entered the house.

"He realised later that the soccer boots were no longer there and that someone must have taken it," Mofokeng said.

"The man walked around asking people in the surrounding areas if they knew what had happened with his boots."

His neighbours joined in to help him investigate the matter. They came across two men who were collecting empty glass bottles. When approached, one of the men fled. The second man had a bag with him that contained the stolen boots.

"The suspect was then taken back to the house from where he allegedly stole the boots, from where the community members assaulted him.”

He died from his injuries.

The man whose boots were stolen was arrested, along with five other members of the community.

A case of murder was currently under investigation at the Norkem police station in Kempton Park.
