A mother and her 3-year-old daughter died after their house caught fire on Thursday evening in Ngqamakhwe in the Eastern Cape, police said on Friday.

Spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the 40-year-old mother left her four children at home when she went to the shop.

When she returned, one of the children told her that the house was on fire, Manatha said. The toddler was still trapped inside.

"She came back rushing and went inside the burning house trying to rescue the child. Unfortunately, both of them died in the fire."

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
