Cape Town – A Valhalla Park mother was arrested on Thursday, almost two weeks after her young son was found alone on a dark street, Western Cape police on Thursday.

The mother, 20, was set to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court on Friday, police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said.

She faces a charge of child abandonment.

A witness saw the 18-month-old boy playing in Simon Street just after midnight on December 5.

Van Wyk said the witness was unable to find the child's parents when she asked residents if anyone knew who the child belonged to.

Police distributed photos of the boy, who appeared well looked after and smiled for the camera.

"Social services will handle the well-being of the child," said Van Wyk.
