Pietermaritzburg - While most parts of South Africa saw low temperatures over the weekend, light snowfalls created picturesque scenes in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

People in these areas took to social media to post their scenic photographs of the white mountain tops.

Rob Ansell of Snow Report SA yesterday said the only snow in KZN was visible on Saturday morning on the Southern Drakensberg. Bushmans Nek experienced a thin layer of snow that melted quickly and cleared by midday.

Ansell said more snow was expected to fall last night in Lesotho.

A few snowfall reports came from Hogsback in the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape at the weekend.

The Snow Report forecast indicated that there was a huge expectation of snow in the north of Lesotho (Afriski Mountain Resort area) late yesterday afternoon.

In KZN today, snow is expected in the Drakensberg areas.

“The Eastern Cape Drakensberg areas will also get some light snow, with some heavier falls possible in the Tiffindell area and around Rhodes.

“Some light snow might also drift into the Golden Gate area of the Free State (Clarens might get lucky as well),” according to Snow Report.

Other areas of Lesotho could get between 15 cm and 25 cm in the early hours of today.

SA Weather Service forecaster Wisani Maluleke said cold weather was expected today and snow was also expected in the Lesotho mountains today.

But he added that SA Weather Services did not pick up any snow reports from the weekend.

It could be due to the very light dusting of snow, he said.

“Our satellite did not detect any sign of snow in KZN,” said Maluleke.

“If there was any snow, perhaps it was very thin and our satellite could not pick it up. However, snow is expected to fall in Lesotho tomorrow [today] and the cold weather is expected to continue today.”
