Johannesburg - A gunman and resident of the Meadows complex has been killed, police spokesperson captain David Miller has confirmed.

The coast was still not clear after a series of shootings that left three people dead at Moreleta Park outside Pretoria on Wednesday night.

Brinant Security area manager Carl Coston said the situation was still being assessed at 21:30.

Earlier, two police officers, three private reaction officers and the complex security head had gone to the house to attend to a complaint that a man was throwing stones at residents.

When they got to the unit, shots were fired at them and they scattered.

The two policemen and two other guards only managed to hide away in a place where the shooter's bullets would not reach them.

In the course of the afternoon a neighbour and two other people were shot, said Coston.

Edward Gobey who managed security at the Moreleta complex is among the three other people who have been killed in the shooting.

Miller said a wide police cordon was put up around the area because of the volatile situation and residents were kept at a distance for their safety.

A special police task team eventually managed to secure the escape of the two police officers and the two guards.
