Cape Town - A 63-year-old Mossel Bay man has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars for raping an 8-year-old girl, the NPA said on Thursday.

Nonoho Joseph Mothikga was convicted of snatching her as she walked to her school in KwaNonqaba on November 6 2014, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said.

He dragged her into his single bedroom house, opposite her primary school.

“He forced her to take off her school uniform before raping her. The young girl went to school where her teacher saw blood on her and asked about it. She told the teacher what happened and the matter was reported to the police.”

The child pointed out the house to the investigating officer.

“The next morning police arrested the accused and he was pointed out by the complainant from a line-up of 12 photos in a photo identity parade. The girl also described the inside of the house to the police, who later found it to be exactly as described,” Ntabazalila explained.

Prosecutor Johannes Erasmus said she was a reliable witness.

Mothikga was sentenced by the Mossel Bay Regional Court on Wednesday.

“The version of the accused was simply a denial. He could not explain how the complainant was able to describe the inside of the house, nor pick him from a line-up. The accused also called an alibi witness to testify on his behalf, but the witness during cross-examination conceded that she could not provide an alibi for the time the offence occurred,” Erasmus said.

The court deviated from the prescribed sentence for rape.

“The court found that the accused, being a man of advanced age, would probably not survive a sentence of life imprisonment.”
