Most ANC bus crash patients transferred to Gauteng

Bloemfontein – Most of the more than 50 people injured in a bus crash that killed 10 ANC supporters have been transferred to Gauteng hospitals, the Free State health department said on Tuesday.

“Gauteng was committed last night to clear all their people – however two remain in Pelonomi hospital in Bloemfontein,” said spokesperson Mondli Mvambi.

One was in a critical but stable condition and the other was being admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

On Monday, Free State police said the two drivers swapped seats when the bus carrying 65 ANC members overturned on the N1 near Winburg.

Lieutenant Malebo Khosana said a 31-year-old driver was briefly detained for his role in Sunday’s accident.

The bus was carrying ANC members to Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, after they attended the launch of the ANC's local government elections manifesto in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Relatives of the deceased gathered at the Germiston mortuary on Tuesday afternoon to identity the bodies of their loved ones. Five men and five women were killed.
