It was a sad day when the family of Sandra Schwartz had to commemorate her birthday on Sunday – she would’ve turned 40.

The bodies of Sandra (39), her daughters Shereé (19) and Lee-Ann (16), and son, Simeon (10), were discovered in the living room of their home in Sallies Village in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, about a month ago. All four had been shot dead.

Before Sandra’s death, the family had been planning a 40th birthday party for her on Sunday 20 August. “We’d been planning on getting together and having a big family lunch,” Sandra’s sister Linda Hamer told YOU on Wednesday.

“I still can’t believe she’s gone,” she says.

Since the shooting on 10 July, Sandra’s family haven’t had any contact with her husband, Johan (41).

He also didn’t respond to YOU’s efforts to contact him for comment. With each phone call his cellphone went straight to voicemail.

The guesthouse where he’s the manager confirmed that he’s still employed there but YOU’s efforts to reach him there were fruitless.

Shortly after the incident Johan’s employer, Samantha Labuschagne, described John as a “loyal, stable and loving person” who’d “lived for his family”.

“He’s really struggling to accept that his family is gone,” she said.

She added the death of his son was especially hard for Johan to deal with.

In the meantime, the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting has been referred to the provincial police department.

“I pray every day that God will bless the investigation and I believe they’re making progress,” Linda says.

Police spokesman colonel Lungelo Dlamini, says the investigation into the deaths continue but he’s unable to share any details at this time.
