Tzaneen - A 22-year-old man, who knocked over a traffic officer, killing him in a hit-and-run incident, had his charge of culpable homicide changed to murder when he appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

"The charge was changed from that of culpable homicide to murder due to the extreme serious circumstances in this matter and the additional charges such as reckless and/or negligent driving and failing to stop after an accident were also added," police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.

Akani Brendon Mgimeti remained in custody and was expected back in court on Friday for his formal bail application.

Mgimeti allegedly knocked over the 40-year-old officer, Butana Hector Mlondobozi, who was performing point duty on Sunday on the R36 just outside Tzaneen.

Mgimeti drove away from the scene.

Ngoepe on Monday said Mgimeti handed himself over to police on Sunday night.
