Polokwane – Department of basic education minister Angie Motshekga on Friday voiced her disappointment on the burning of schools in Vuwani saying the district had produced some of Limpopo's top learners.

"Vhembe is one rural area which was doing extremely well. Especially in this district, they do well. Your top schools come from this area. For me it's disappointing..." she said.

Motshekga was speaking after coming out of deadlock meetings with traditional leaders on Friday. She and several other ministers had visited the area in past week in an effort to bring calm to the area.

At least 23 schools were set alight and 19 schools have been burnt down. Vuwani residents are protesting against being incorporated into a new municipality that will include Malamulele.

Motshekga said her main concern was the loss of valuable school records.

"We don't only lose a building, we lose school records. You can rebuild classes but you can't recreate those records. Our systems do not have backup," she added.

Motshekga said alternative plans for learners depended in the stability in the area.

"We have to get a full briefing from our officials... That report is also going to be informed by the stability of the area. For now, our main priority is to mainly protect the remaining infrastructure."
