Cape Town – One member of Parliament was killed and three others were seriously injured in an oversight visit to Paarl on Wednesday morning, Parliament said.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said they were travelling in a Hyundai H1 when they were involved in a collision with a taxi near Wemmershoek, between Franschhoek and Paarl in the Cape Winelands.

The MPs served on the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education and were on their way to visit various schools in the area.

"One of the MPs passed away at the scene. The three other MPs are seriously injured and are receiving emergency medical attention," said spokesperson for Parliament, Moloto Mothapo.

The committee began a week of oversight visits in the Western Cape on Monday, July 31.

The MPs were scheduled to meet education officials, the provincial education portfolio committee and organised labour, as well as visit several schools.

The committee, chaired by Nomalungelo Gina, covers early childhood education to the last year of school, matriculation.

The oversight visits give MPs an opportunity to get more information on issues that are raised during their meetings at Parliament.

They have an opportunity to ask questions on the ground, and for people to approach them to raise issues.

Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer was shocked by the news of the crash.

"My thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time, and the other members who have been injured and part of the accident," said Schafer.

This is a developing story.
