Mbombela – The Mpumalanga government will soon be reshuffled after two MECs were given senior jobs at municipal level, the ANC in the province has said.

Social development MEC Nomsa Mtshweni was appointed Thembisile Hani municipality mayor, and public works MEC Dumisile Nhlengethwa was made speaker of the Msukaligwa municipality, ANC provincial deputy chairperson Violet Siwela told reporters on Tuesday.

“Our purpose as the leadership in the province is to deploy our municipality comrades who are experienced. It is not a demotion, but it is a deployment.”

The provincial cabinet would be reshuffled soon to replace the two MECs.

Meanwhile, Cosatu provincial secretary Fidel Mlombo and former Chief Albert Luthuli local municipality mayor Busisiwe Shiba had been appointed members of the provincial legislature.

Siwela said the party in the province was unhappy with the loss of support during last week’s local government elections. The ANC got 70.7% of the votes in the province, compared to 78% in 2011, which was “of great concern” to the party. The ANC would introspect to determine what went wrong, she said.

The DA got 12.9% of the votes and the EFF 9.3%
