Middelburg- A Mpumalanga school principal will appear in court in September for allegedly assaulting a schoolboy, possibly causing injuries that resulted in his death five months later, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Thursday.

Christinah Choma, 44, said on Thursday she was looking forward to facing the man who allegedly attacked her son, Siphamandla Choma, 14, at Manyano Primary School, apparently after he stole R150. The assault happened in November 2016. He died in March.

NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said the principal would be in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on September 6 on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The charge might be altered depending on the outcome of an investigation still underway.

The teenager sustained injuries to his left leg and spinal cord. Choma said she still misses her son. He had six siblings.

“Siphamandla was the one child who had no problems running the errands in the house and he never complained. I loved him because he was easy to work with. He taught me how to use a phone. He was quite handy,” she said.

The provincial education department sacked the principal on July 21. Spokesperson Jasper Zwane said he was found guilty of misconduct following a disciplinary hearing.
