Mbombela - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Mpumalanga is pushing for Premier David Mabuza to fire some MECs and appoint youth leaders in his provincial cabinet instead.

ANCYL spokesperson Vusi Mkhatshwa told a News24 correspondent that the league's provincial chair and national deputy president, Desmond Moela, and its secretary, Sasekani Manzini, should be sworn in as members of the provincial legislature.

He said the ANCYL hoped that Mabuza, who is ANC provincial chair, would respond to this call before Christmas.

"Yes the names of our members most definitely need to be in the list for the legislature. We are pushing for the 40% youth representation and we trying to make sure that it is achieved," said Mkhatshwa.

"We make this call confidently and believing that the chairperson, as a product of the youth movement himself, values the views of young people and he will... speedily act on our call so that we have a Merry Christmas with some of these useless MECs and [heads of department] having fallen."

Mkhatshwa would not reveal the names of the MECs and officials who should be removed from their positions.

"We hope to do so as time goes on," he said.

During the 2014 general elections, the ANC in the province lost three legislature seats, two to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and one to the Bushbuckridge Residents Association (BRA).

Mabuza returned to office midway through November after two months of sick leave. Moela, a director in the provincial education department, was among the throng of ANC supporters who gathered to welcome him back, taking to the stage to call for some MECs and department heads to "fall."

When approached for comment, Mabuza's spokesperson Zibonele Mncwango repeated the premier's statement that he had not returned to work "to fire people".
